I'm Brittany — a mom of four, photographer for 17+ years, and someone who's been exactly where you are. I do what I do because I know how fast these days slip by, and I want to make sure you remember every beautiful, chaotic, fleeting moment.
Hi there!
June 16, 2026

You just had a baby, and you are running on a combination of love, adrenaline, and very little sleep. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you know you want photographs of this moment, the real and unhurried kind, but you are not entirely sure what walking into a newborn session actually looks like. This post is for you.
As a Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer serving families across North Idaho and the greater Spokane area, I want you to arrive at your session feeling calm and prepared. Here is exactly what to expect from start to finish.

I am Brittany, a newborn and family photographer based in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and I have been photographing newborns for over ten years. In that time I have had the privilege of being one of the first people outside of a family to meet a brand new baby, and that never gets old.
I also happen to be a mom of four, with kids ranging from two to eight years old, which means I am living the same season of life that most of my clients are in. I know what it feels like to hold a newborn and simultaneously feel like time is both standing still and slipping through your fingers. I know the exceptional exhaustion and the immense joy of those early weeks, and I bring understanding for both of those things into every session I photograph as a Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer.
My style is warm and cinematic, rooted in the belief that the images from your baby’s earliest days should feel as meaningful as the moments themselves. When you walk into a session with me, you are not just getting photographs. You are getting someone who genuinely understands what this season of life feels like and is honored to help you hold onto it.

The most important thing you can do before your session is book it. Newborns change so quickly in the first weeks of life, and the ideal window for newborn photography is within the first two weeks after birth. During this time, babies are still sleepy and curled, still holding the shape they kept for nine months, and that particular softness does not last long.
I recommend booking your session before your baby arrives so that the date is already on the calendar when you come home from the hospital. The last thing you need in those first hazy days is to be searching for availability while also learning how to keep a tiny human alive. And no, you don’t need to worry about an exact due date. I know that baby will choose to come when they are good and ready, sometimes they’re late, sometimes they’re early. Your session date isn’t set in stone but it guarantees a place in my calendar for you around your due date.
In the weeks leading up to your session before baby’s arrival, I will send you everything you need to know about how to prepare, including what to bring, how to feed your baby beforehand, and what to wear if you would like to be included in any portraits (which you definitely do, I promise). The goal is for you to show up and simply be present while I handle everything else. Then all you have to do is text me once baby is here and we will move from there at a pace that feels comfortable for your recovery and baby’s.

As your Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer, I offer sessions in my studio or on location, depending on what feels right for your family. My studio is a calm, warm, and intentionally designed space where babies settle and parents finally exhale. If you have been dreaming of soft wraps, natural baby-led posing, and the classic newborn portraits that live on nursery walls for years, the studio is typically the right fit.
For families who want something a little more personal, such as your own home, a meaningful outdoor setting, or a space that already tells your story, on-location sessions are also an option we can talk through together.
Either way, please plan to start your session without a hard stop on your time. Newborns set the pace, and often need time to feed and change diapers. No need to apologize for this at all, we can trauma bond over tackling their first blowout together! I have years of experience in those too!

A newborn session with me runs approximately two to three hours. That might sound like a long time, but newborn photography is genuinely unhurried work and that time goes quickly once we are in it.
We let your baby lead. Feeding breaks, settling time, and soothing are all a natural part of the process. There is no rushing a newborn, and I would never try. The most beautiful images come when your baby is comfortable and calm, so we take whatever time that requires.
We work through a variety of setups. Depending on your baby and how the session flows, we will move through different wraps, and backdrops but primarily we will be focusing on simple family portraits, including you holding your baby, close details of tiny hands, and siblings meeting their new person for the very first time. These tend to be the images families treasure most over time.
You do not have to do anything except be there. I will guide every pose, every setup, and every transition. You are welcome to sit, have a snack, and just soak up this time with your new little person. A relaxed parent almost always means a relaxed baby, so whatever helps you settle in is the right thing to do.
P.s. Mom, if you need an extra hand getting yourself ready, just say the word! I have trusted hair and makeup referrals ready for you!

Once your session wraps, I will begin the process of carefully editing your gallery. When your images are ready, we will meet for a reveal appointment where you will see your photographs for the first time together, displayed beautifully so you can truly experience them the way they are meant to be seen.
This is also where we talk about how you want to display and preserve your images. Framed wall art, heirloom albums, and fine art prints are the products that take your photographs off a hard drive and into your home, where they belong. A photograph that lives in a frame on your wall or in an album on your coffee table is something your family interacts with every single day, and that is a very different thing from a file sitting in a folder. In fact research shows it actually helps build a child’s sense of belonging and self-esteem.

Parents sometimes wonder whether professional newborn photography is worth the investment when phone cameras have come so far. It is a fair question, and I think about it honestly.
What a phone cannot do is slow you down. It cannot create two to three hours of intentional, unhurried space where the only thing on the agenda is your new baby. It cannot produce the kind of images that stop you in your tracks ten years from now. It cannot hand you something tangible, something printed and permanent, that your child will one day hold in their own hands.
The newborn stage is the one stage you truly cannot go back to, and professional photographs are how you make sure you never find yourself wishing you had done more to capture it. Choosing a Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer means investing in something your family will return to for decades.

A newborn session is where your first year photography plan can begin, but it is not where it has to end. The first year is too full and too fast to document in a single afternoon, which is why I offer a first year photography plan that spans the entire journey from brand new baby to first birthday.
The plan includes three sessions total. Your newborn session happens in those early weeks when your baby is brand new and the world still feels a little surreal. The milestone session happens around six months, when your baby has found their smile, learned to sit up, and started to show you exactly who they are becoming. Finally the first birthday session is a full celebration, complete with a cake smash, and family portraits celebrating your little one and you! After all you survived your first year of parenting -that’s worth celebrating too!
Each session on its own is meaningful, but planning the three together tell a story that no single session ever could. When you look at a newborn portrait next to a six month image next to a first birthday photograph, you are not just looking at three pictures. You are watching your baby arrive in the world and become themselves across an entire year, and you are watching your family grow right alongside them.
I have packages that allow you to break payments for this up throughout those 14 months and can include a custom heirloom baby book, beautifully curated from our sessions together and built to last. So that one day, even your grand-babies can relive these moments with you too.

If you are expecting or have a newborn at home right now, I would love to connect. Sessions book in advance and the early weeks fill quickly, so the sooner we can get your date on the calendar, the better.
Reach out through my contact page and we will start the conversation. I cannot wait to meet your family.
